HEART WORMS

Heartworms have a higher incidence in some areas more than others but they are becoming more of a threat all the time. If you travel with your dog at all you should keep him protected.

Simple in-house blood tests must be done first before medication is provided. There is a real risk of medicating a dog that hasn't been tested. If an infected dog is given medication the worms will die and move into the lungs and cause respiratory failure due to asphixia, which will result in the dogs death.

If your dog does have heart worms, he will undergo injections of medication that slowly kills the worms a little at a time. This is costly, can take two or three weeks and can be dangerous for the dog, depending on his overall condition and the extent of the infestation.

Prevetion really is the best medicine. There are some very good products available to prevent heartworms, Heartgard Plus, Revolution are two of the most common.
